"Slip-resistant" gets used loosely in flooring marketing, but there's an actual measurable standard behind legitimate claims: the Dynamic Coefficient of Friction, or DCOF. It's a real number, it's testable, and it's the difference between a floor that's genuinely safer in wet conditions and one that just sounds like it is.
DCOF measures the friction between a standardized test foot and the flooring surface under wet conditions — essentially, how much resistance to sliding the floor provides once it's wet. The ANSI A326.3 standard sets 0.42 as the commonly referenced minimum wet DCOF for level interior flooring intended for foot traffic, though specific applications (kitchens, wet-process areas) often warrant going higher.
A smooth epoxy topcoat, even a good one, typically tests well below the 0.42 threshold once wet — smooth and slip-resistant are somewhat contradictory goals. Broadcasting aggregate (aluminum oxide, silica sand, or polymer grit) into the wet base coat before topcoating physically textures the surface and is what actually pushes the DCOF rating up into a safe range for wet or greasy areas.
Higher slip resistance generally means a rougher surface, which is somewhat harder to keep perfectly clean and can be marginally less comfortable underfoot for standing workers over a full shift. The right answer isn't "maximum grip everywhere" — it's matching broadcast density to the actual wet-exposure risk of each zone, which is a conversation worth having during your walkthrough rather than defaulting to one texture facility-wide.
