"Chemical-resistant" isn't one product — it's a spectrum of resin chemistries, each resistant to a different range of substances. The right choice depends entirely on what's actually being spilled, dripped, or washed across your floor, which means the first step in any real spec conversation is an honest inventory of your process chemicals, not a generic "industrial-grade" request.

Standard Epoxy: Baseline Resistance

Standard 100% solids epoxy resists mild chemical exposure — light oils, water-based cleaners, occasional splashes — reasonably well, but it's not built for sustained exposure to solvents, strong acids, or caustics. It's the right (and most cost-effective) choice for plants without meaningful chemical exposure beyond routine cleaning.

Novolac-Modified Epoxy: The Step Up

Novolac epoxy handles a meaningfully broader range of solvents, oils, and mild-to-moderate acids than standard epoxy, making it the common choice for machine shops, plants with regular solvent or coolant exposure, and food-and-beverage production floors dealing with acidic cleaning cycles.

MMA (Methyl Methacrylate): Speed Plus Resistance

MMA systems combine strong chemical resistance with a dramatically faster cure — often usable within an hour versus days for epoxy — and better tolerance for cold installation temperatures. The tradeoff is a stronger odor during installation (ventilation matters) and typically higher material cost.

Specifying by "industrial-grade" without listing actual chemicals, which leads to a system that handles some but not all of what's really on the floor.

Choosing based on price alone and underspending on chemical resistance, which shows up as staining, softening, or delamination within a year or two of the specific chemical exposure the cheaper system wasn't rated for.
